The experience

You'll meet your USCG captain and in-water guide at the private dock before heading into Kings Bay to find and swim alongside manatees. Both guides are trained in manatee manners through the Manatee Eco Tourism Association and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, so they know how to approach these gentle giants safely and how to read their behavior. As you enter the water in your full wetsuit, the guide teaches you what to expect: how manatees move, what they eat, when they're comfortable with swimmers nearby. Your captain stays with the boat while your in-water guide stays with you, answering questions and making sure the interaction stays calm for both you and the animals.

The three-hour outing includes everything you need: a 5mm wetsuit, mask, snorkel and fins. Coffee, hot chocolate and tea are served on board. The boats are heated, and when you come back to the dock, you'll find a heated changing facility and hot showers waiting. All guides speak English and are trained as first responders with CPR, AED and in-water rescue certification.

Top questions

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What should I know about swimming with manatees before I book?

Manatees are wild animals and their presence in Kings Bay depends on water temperature and season. Your guide will teach you their behavioral patterns and how to interact respectfully, but sightings are not guaranteed. The guides are trained to read manatee comfort and will keep the group at a safe distance if the animals show signs of stress.

Is this snorkeling activity suitable for someone who's never snorkeled before?

Yes. Your guide teaches you everything you need to know about using the mask and snorkel before you enter the water. The activity requires at least a moderate level of physical fitness, and the guide will assess your comfort in the water during the outing.

What's included in the three-hour activity?

Full 5mm wetsuits, mask, snorkel, fins, coffee or hot chocolate, towel service, and access to heated changing facilities and hot showers at the dock. All equipment is provided. You bring nothing but yourself and a willingness to get wet.

Can I bring my family with young children?

Infants and small children can come along in a pram or stroller at the dock, but only swimmers in the water participate in the snorkeling activity. Service animals are welcome. The dock and boats are wheelchair accessible if mobility support is needed.

How cold is the water, and will the wetsuit keep me warm?

Crystal River's water temperature varies by season. A full 5mm wetsuit is provided and designed to keep you warm and protected during the three-hour outing. The heated boats and hot showers afterward help you warm up when you're done.
