The Experience

I opened my eyes underwater and there it was—a huge, gentle manatee just drifting by like it had all the time in the world. The water in Crystal River was colder than I expected (even with the wetsuit), but honestly, I barely noticed once we got paddling. Our guide, Mike, had this way of telling stories about the river that made me forget about my clumsy paddling. He pointed out birds I’d never even heard of and somehow spotted a manatee before any of us did—just a slow gray shadow moving under the kayak. I think I grinned like an idiot when I realized what was happening.

We’d started early because apparently that’s when you have the best shot at seeing them, especially during manatee season. There were only five of us plus Mike—felt more like a group of friends than a tour. At one point he stopped us to talk about why the manatees come here when it’s cold (I didn’t know they’re basically looking for warm springs).
