You arrive in Crystal River with a free afternoon and no plan to fill it, or you've booked a manatee-season trip and need to know what actually happens on the water. Kings Bay is the spring-fed heart of the area — a network of more than 30 natural springs holding a constant 72 degrees. The clear kayak sits low enough that you watch turtles, fish, and birds move beneath you through the hull, and the limestone floor stays visible the whole time. Your guide is a local who knows the water and the wildlife, and the group stays under ten people.

Which tour you paddle depends on when you book. April through November, you paddle to Three Sisters Springs — one of Florida's most striking spring systems, turquoise and spring-fed, with time to get out and swim in water that never changes temperature. November 15 through March 31, Three Sisters becomes a protected manatee sanctuary closed to paddlers, so you stay in the surrounding warm springs of Kings Bay instead, where hundreds of manatees gather to escape the cold Gulf. On manatee-season tours, you watch them through the clear hull and practice passive observation only — no wetsuit, no getting in the water. Cold days are the best manatee days. The whole outing runs two hours, and your guide photographs the day and sends the images along.

You bring a valid driver's license, wear the Coast Guard-approved life jacket provided, and paddle with the paddles and dry bag the tour includes. The kayak is a tandem (two-seat), so you're not paddling alone. A $5 parking fee is payable at the kiosk when you arrive; bring cash or card. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, and the tour is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or over 250 pounds per seat (425 pounds total per kayak).
