The Experience

I’ll be honest, I wasn’t sure what to expect from an off-road tour in Bulldog Canyon. The idea sounded a little wild—bouncing around the Tonto National Forest north of Usery Mountain, somewhere between Phoenix and the Salt River, with nothing but sand and rocks under our wheels. But as soon as we hit that first stretch of sandy track (our guide called it “3554,” which sounds like a robot name), I just started grinning. The sand was soft and kicked up in little clouds behind us, like we were driving through some old western movie set—except there were saguaro cacti everywhere, not tumbleweeds.

Our guide, Mike, kept pointing out plants I’d never even noticed before—tiny purple wildflowers poking up next to giant prickly pears, and these weirdly elegant ocotillos that looked almost like green fireworks frozen in midair. He slowed down when he spotted hoof prints in the dust (“javelina or wild horses,” he guessed), and at one point we stopped so everyone could pile out for a quick hike up to this rocky overlook. The view was nuts—Superstition Mountains on one side, Four Peaks way off in the haze, Phoenix looking kind of dreamy through the afternoon light. Someone’s phone played music for a second by accident and it was weirdly perfect.

I didn’t expect how much I’d love the silence out there. Even with the engines cooling down after climbing over boulders on Forest Road 10 (which is definitely bumpier than the first part), there was this hush—just wind moving through creosote bushes and a hawk circling overhead. Mike told us stories about people getting lost out here back in the day; apparently even locals don’t come into Bulldog Canyon much unless they’re really into off-roading or hiking. That made me feel lucky to see it at all.

The last stop was another short walk up to this lookout where you can see Tempe and pretty much all of Phoenix spread out below. We took photos but mostly just stood around drinking cold water from the cooler (soda too if you wanted) and trying to spot big horn sheep on distant ridges. Heading back down toward civilization felt strange—I still think about that quiet up there sometimes when I’m stuck in city traffic.
