Snorkeling Panama City Beach: Swim With Dolphins
You get in the water with dolphins whenever they appear, then snorkel the shallows collecting live specimens.
Swim with dolphins in their natural habitat and snorkel Shell Island during a 4-hour guided activity in Panama City Beach. The boat departs from the marina and cruises 15 minutes to the island, stopping to put you in the water with dolphins along the way; once there, you snorkel the jetties and shallow seagrass beds where you collect and handle sand dollars, sea urchins, hermit crabs, and occasional seahorses under guide instruction, then walk Shell Island to spot herons, egrets and pelicans. A professional guide leads the group in English, Spanish, French or German, and snorkeling gear and life vests are provided.
The Experience
The boat leaves the marina and heads toward Shell Island—a 15-minute ride where dolphins often appear. Whenever the guide spots them and conditions are safe, you enter the water to observe them socializing, playing, feeding, jumping or traveling. If a pod moves on, the boat follows or searches for another group. The dolphins decide the rhythm; you watch and swim as the moment allows.
Once dolphin activity slows, you snorkel the jetties where tropical fish, occasional sea turtles and stingrays move through the water. Then the boat moves into the shallow seagrass beds of the bay—the heart of the activity. Here you collect live specimens: sand dollars, sea urchins, scallops, hermit crabs, blue crabs, tulip shells, moon snails, Florida Fighting Conchs, and depending on the season, occasional seahorses. The guide teaches you how to handle each one, what it eats, where it lives and why it matters to the ecosystem. You hold them, observe their movement and behavior, then return them to the water.
After the collecting and snorkeling, you can get off the boat and walk Shell Island itself. Great blue herons, snowy egrets, ospreys and pelicans nest and hunt there. The whole activity runs 4 hours from departure to return. Snorkeling goggles and a life vest are provided; bring your own if you prefer. Bottled water is included.

Can I actually swim with the dolphins or just watch them from the boat?
You enter the water to swim with dolphins whenever the guide finds them and conditions are safe. The boat follows pods as they move, and you get in multiple times during the 4 hours if dolphins stay in the area. Watching from the boat happens too, but water time with them is the core of the activity.
What exactly do you collect and handle in the shallow bay?
You collect sand dollars, sea urchins, hermit crabs, scallops, blue crabs, tulip shells, moon snails, Florida Fighting Conchs, and occasionally seahorses depending on the season and water conditions. The guide shows you how to hold each one safely and explains what it eats and its role in the ecosystem before you return it to the water.
Is this snorkeling activity suitable for young children and families?
Yes, it's designed for all ages. Infants and small children can ride in a stroller or pram on the boat. Children in the water must be attended by a family member at all times. No age restriction applies, and the guide manages the pace for mixed groups.
What's included in the 4-hour activity, and do I need to bring my own snorkeling gear?
Snorkeling goggles, a life vest, bottled water and government fees are included. You can bring your own snorkeling gear if you prefer, but the boat supplies everything you need to participate.
How far is Shell Island from the marina, and what will I see there?
Shell Island is about a 15-minute boat ride from the marina. Once you arrive, you can walk the island to spot great blue herons, snowy egrets, ospreys and pelicans in their natural habitat.
