Snorkeling & Swim with Dolphins: Panama City Beach
Dolphins in clear water, shells on the beach, a boat just for your group
Swim with dolphins and snorkel at Shell Island off Panama City Beach on a private boat tour with an English-speaking guide. Groups of up to 6 people ride out 15 minutes to the Gulf of Mexico, where dolphins gather in the clear emerald water; then stop at Shell Island to search for shells, sand dollars and starfish in the shallows. Life jackets, masks and snorkels are provided and sanitized before each trip; a cooler of ice and water comes aboard.
Step-by-step itinerary
Dolphin swim and snorkeling tour
- Boat ride to Gulf of Mexico
- Swim with dolphins in clear waters
- Stop at Shell Island
- Snorkel for shells and starfish
- Walk along quiet beach
The Experience
The boat leaves with just your group—up to 6 people, or up to 12 if you book both vessels, which stay within talking distance the whole time. A 15-minute ride takes you out to the Gulf of Mexico, where the water is clear and dolphins gather because the bait is abundant there. You'll swim and watch for Bottlenose dolphins, sea turtles, manta rays and other marine life that moves through Florida's waters. The guide is live and speaks English, so you get real-time information about what you're seeing instead of a recording.
The second half of the tour stops at Shell Island, a barrier island in Panama City Beach that stays mostly untouched. You snorkel in the shallows looking for shells, sand dollars and starfish, or walk the quiet beach if you want to get out of the water. Everything you need to snorkel is provided—masks, snorkels and life jackets that are sanitized before each trip. Bring your own cooler with food and drinks if you want to eat; the boat carries ice and water, but no prepared food.
The whole outing runs about 2 hours. If weather turns bad, the operator cancels and refunds you in full. Larger groups may be split between two boats due to Coast Guard regulations, but both boats stay together for snorkeling at Shell Island and dolphin encounters, so everyone has the same experience.

What dolphins will I see on this snorkeling trip to Panama City Beach?
Bottlenose dolphins are the most common sighting, especially in the clear Gulf waters where the tour heads. You'll also see sea turtles, manta rays, starfish, sand dollars, puffer fish and many other marine species that live in Florida's waters. The guide points them out and explains what you're looking at as you swim.
How long does the snorkeling at Shell Island take?
Shell Island is the second stop on the tour, and you spend time snorkeling in the shallows there searching for shells and starfish, or walking the beach if you prefer. The entire outing is about 2 hours, with roughly 15 minutes of travel time out to the dolphin area and back, leaving the rest for swimming and the island stop.
What's included in the snorkeling equipment?
Life jackets, masks and snorkels are all provided and sanitized before each trip. You wear the life jacket the whole time for safety. Bring your own sunscreen, sunglasses and UV-protective clothing; the boat does not supply those. If you want food or drinks beyond ice water, pack a cooler to bring aboard.
Can I book this snorkeling tour for a large group?
Groups of up to 6 people fit on one boat. If you have up to 12 people, the operator runs two boats that stay within talking distance of each other, so both groups snorkel at Shell Island and encounter dolphins together. Larger groups are split between the two vessels due to Coast Guard capacity rules, but they never separate during the tour.
What happens if the weather is bad on the day of my snorkeling tour?
The operator cancels the tour if weather is unsafe and issues a full refund. Check the forecast a day or two before your booking and plan accordingly.
