Dolphins and a 7-Mile Island: What Three Hours Looks Like on the Water

You board a 27ft boat, spend the first 90 minutes watching for wild dolphins, then anchor at Shell Island to snorkel, search for shells and starfish, or swim. Snorkeling gear is provided. The whole trip takes three hours, and you return to Panama City Beach without having arranged separate equipment rentals or transport to an island you can't reach by car.

Step-by-step itinerary

Dolphin tour and snorkeling adventure

  • Board 27ft private tour boat
  • View dolphins in natural habitat
  • Explore Shell Island beaches
  • Relax and look for sea shells
  • Snorkel for sand dollars and starfish
  • Optional swim with dolphins

The Experience

"So we're actually going to see them?" That's what most people ask before boarding the 27ft boat, and the answer is yes — but not the way you'd see them at a marine park. Capt. Ashley Bishop, who trained marine mammals before running these tours, knows where the dolphins move through the water around Panama City Beach, and he takes the boat out to meet them in their space. The whole trip runs three hours, and it splits almost evenly: you spend the first part watching for dolphins in their natural habitat, then head to Shell Island, a seven-mile stretch of undeveloped beach that's only reachable by boat.

Shell Island itself is the kind of place that makes you understand why people come back to the same beach town year after year. There's no development, no vendors, just sand and shallow water. You can walk the shoreline looking for shells and sand dollars, wade out to snorkel for starfish, or just sit and let the noise of the city fade. Some people swim; some people don't. The pace is yours. Snorkeling gear is included, so you don't need to rent or bring your own. If you want to swim with the dolphins when they're nearby, you can do that too — it's an option, not a requirement, and Capt. Bishop will tell you when it's safe and when the animals are comfortable with it.

The boat itself matters here. At 27 feet, it's the largest and fastest private tour boat running these trips, which means less crowding and a smoother ride out to the island. You're not packed in with forty other people; groups stay small. The whole experience is built around avoiding the packed public beaches and the shopping strips that line the main drag. You get out on the water, see what's actually there, and come back without the noise.

What’s included

  • Your three hours include hotel or dock pickup (confirm with the operator), use of snorkeling equipment, the boat ride to Shell Island and back, and access to the island itself.
  • You spend time looking for dolphins in their natural habitat, then explore the seven-mile undeveloped beach, where you can snorkel, search for shells and starfish, or swim.
  • The captain is a former marine mammal trainer who knows the local waters.

Is this one for you?Book this if you want to see dolphins without a crowded tour boat and want a reason to leave the main beach for a few hours — the 27ft boat keeps groups small, and Shell Island is only reachable by water, so you get somewhere most visitors don't go.
