Ouray Rock Climbing: Volcanic Walls & Waterfalls
Climb steep sport routes, trad lines and a waterfall wall in one day
A full-day rock climbing activity in Ouray led by Mountain Trip's AMGA certified guides, who have guided climbers in the San Juans since 1973. You climb a mix of terrain (volcanic walls, steep sport routes, traditional lines), and for an extra challenge, rappel into a canyon to climb above roaring water at the Waterfall Wall. Routes range from 5.5 to 5.13, shaped around your goals and fitness level.
The experience
The Dike Wall, Pool Wall, Overlook Cliff and Waterfall Wall are the anchors of the day. You'll move through multiple climbing areas in Ouray's dramatic mountain valley, each one offering a different style and grade. Your guide reads the conditions and your progress as the day unfolds, adjusting which routes you tackle and in what order. The Waterfall Wall (reached by rappel and set in a canyon with water roaring below) is the signature moment, but the day is built on variety: if you want to push into a new grade, work on technique, or simply experience as many different rock types and wall angles as one day allows, the guide shapes the itinerary around that.
Mountain Trip has been running climbers up these peaks since 1973, and your guide carries AMGA certification or training. All protective equipment is provided where required. The day runs eight hours, which means real time on rock, not a rushed sampling. You'll need moderate physical fitness and comfort on vertical terrain. The routes themselves span a wide range, so climbers at different levels can find their challenge within the same day.
