The experience

What makes this different from watching someone else climb is that you're on the ice the whole time, learning the actual movements. The Ouray Ice Park has terrain for every level: a beginner's area for first-timers and children, and steep technical sections for climbers ready to push further. Your guide (AMGA certified or trained) stays with you throughout the eight-hour day, showing you how to tackle steep ice, find rests where you can breathe, and move through mixed climbing (rock and ice together). If you want to go deeper, the guide can walk you through anchor building, lead climbing, and multi-pitch systems.

You show up with the right clothes and shoes. Everything else (boots, crampons, ice tools, harness, helmet) is waiting for you. That means no guessing about fit or whether you have the right equipment. The guide handles the technical setup so you can focus on the climb itself. Pickup is included, so you don't arrange your own transport to the park.

What’s included

What's the difference between the beginner area and the advanced sections at Ouray Ice Park?

The beginner's area is designed for first-timers and children, with lower angles and shorter pitches to build confidence. The steep and technical mixed climbing areas are for climbers with more experience, where you work on harder ice angles and rock-ice combinations.

No. The class is tailored to your skill level, whether you're a first-timer or an experienced climber. Your guide will meet you where you are and build from there.

What technical gear do I need to bring myself?

You bring personal clothing appropriate for a cold day outdoors and your own shoes. All climbing gear (boots, crampons, ice tools, harness and helmet) is provided.

How long is the full-day class, and what time does it start?

The class runs eight hours. Pickup is included, so your guide will arrange the meeting time and transport to Ouray Ice Park based on your location.
