The experience
Ouray Ice Park is built around one idea: ice climbing doesn't require years of training to start. The park features beginner terrain alongside steep technical routes, so your guide can place you exactly where the ice matches your ability. You'll be fitted with boots, crampons, ice tools, a harness and helmet, everything you need to climb, and then spend the day learning footwork, tool placement and how to move on vertical ice under your guide's instruction. AMGA certified or trained guides lead the way, which means they've trained specifically for this terrain and for teaching climbers at every level.
The five-hour session is structured around what you're learning, not a fixed itinerary. A beginner's area is perfect for first-timers and children, while steep and technical mixed climbing areas accommodate more advanced climbers. Your guide will show you technique on easier sections first, then move to harder terrain as you build confidence. This approach means you're not watching others climb or waiting for the group to catch up. You're climbing the whole time, at the difficulty that challenges you without overwhelming you.
Pickup is included from Telluride area hotels, so you don't arrange transport to the park. Bring layers and personal clothing suitable for cold weather. The park is at elevation and the ice stays cold even on sunny days. Guides speak English or Spanish, so if you're more comfortable in Spanish, let the operator know when you book.

Is this one for you?Guides speak English or Spanish, so book the language that matches your comfort level when you reserve. Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English and Spanish.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What's the Ouray Ice Park actually like, is it just one wall or are there different sections?
Ouray Ice Park features multiple climbing areas with varying difficulty and styles. The beginner's area has gentler slopes perfect for learning, while separate sections offer steep and technical mixed climbing for advanced climbers. Your guide chooses which sections match your level.
Do I need ice climbing experience to do this, or can I show up as a complete beginner?
Complete beginners are welcome. The park is designed to be accessible to all abilities, and your AMGA certified guide will teach you footwork, tool placement and movement on ice from the start. Many first-timers begin on the beginner terrain.
What happens if I'm stronger or weaker than I expected once we get there?
Your guide adjusts the terrain to match what you're actually capable of during the session. If you're progressing faster than expected, you'll move to harder sections. If you need more time on fundamentals, the guide keeps you on terrain that builds your skills safely.
Is the five-hour session five hours of actual climbing, or does that include travel time?
The five hours covers your time at the park learning and climbing. Pickup from your hotel and the drive to Ouray Ice Park happen before that window begins.
What if the weather is really cold or there's a storm that day?
Ice climbing happens in cold conditions. That's what keeps the ice solid. Dress in layers and bring cold-weather clothing. The operator will contact you if conditions become unsafe for climbing, though that's rare at this park.
