The Experience
I was honestly nervous walking down to that little triangle of sand at the end of the parking lot in Oahu. The air smelled salty and warm, and there were a few locals already out, waxing boards or just chatting. My instructor — I think his name was Keoni — waved me over and handed me a rash guard that actually fit (small win). He asked if I’d ever tried surfing before. I said no, unless you count falling off a boogie board as a kid. He laughed and said, “We’ll get you standing today.” I didn’t really believe him yet.
We started right by the water’s edge, just running through how to paddle and pop up on the board. Keoni showed me how to keep my feet spaced so I wouldn’t wipe out immediately — easier said than done. The sand felt gritty under my toes, and I kept glancing at the waves rolling in, not sure if they looked inviting or intimidating. There was this moment where he asked if I had any questions, but honestly my mind just went blank except for “please don’t let me embarrass myself.”
Paddling out was harder than it looked on YouTube — arms burning after five minutes, salt stinging my lips. Keoni stayed close, sometimes giving my board a push when I slowed down too much (which was often). When he finally told me to get ready for my first real wave, it happened so fast — he shouted “pop up!” and somehow my legs listened. For maybe two seconds I stood there, knees shaking, wind in my face…and then splashed straight into the water. But he cheered anyway like I’d just won something big. That part stuck with me.
After an hour of trying (and falling), we paddled back in. My hair was full of salt and my arms felt like noodles but honestly? I couldn’t stop grinning. Keoni said he’d send all the photos and videos by email that night — proof that yes, even beginners can catch a wave on their first day trip surf lesson in Oahu. Still thinking about that tiny victory ride every time I see those photos pop up.
