You’ll learn to surf away from Waikiki’s crowds on Oahu’s quieter shores with just two students per lesson. With all gear provided plus GoPro videos included, you’ll catch real waves alongside a local guide—and maybe even laugh at your own wipeouts later.
I’d always pictured learning to surf somewhere crowded, with a dozen boards bumping around me and someone yelling “paddle!” over the wind. But this spot on Oahu was nothing like that. There were just two of us — me and a guy from Minnesota who’d never seen reef shoes before — and our instructor, Keoni. He had that calm local vibe, didn’t rush us, just let us stand barefoot in the sand while he explained how waves actually work (I nodded but honestly, it’s still magic to me).
The sun was already warm even though it wasn’t noon yet. I could smell sunscreen and salt and something sweet from a food truck nearby. We practiced popping up on the board right there on the beach — I fell off into the sand twice before Keoni grinned and said “that’ll happen less in the water.” Maybe he was being nice. When we finally paddled out, it felt weirdly quiet compared to what I expected; just the slap of water against my board and Keoni’s voice telling me when to go for it. The first wave I caught was tiny but I still cheered like a kid — you know that feeling when you surprise yourself?
He had a GoPro strapped to his wrist and kept calling out “smile!” at random moments. I’m probably grimacing in half the footage but whatever, it’s honest. The best part was not having to fight for space or worry about showing off; it was just us, falling off boards and laughing every time one of us wiped out. At some point, Keoni pointed out some sea turtles further down — I couldn’t see them with all the splashing but he seemed pretty sure.
I left tired and salty, arms aching in that good way. Later that night, when I watched those GoPro clips he emailed over (with way too many slow-motion fails), I realized how rare it is to have something feel both new and comfortable at once. Still think about that little break — not perfect surfing, but a perfect morning for me.
