The Experience

Li was already grinning when we shuffled up to the Jamie O’Brien Surf School on Kalakaua Ave—he’d spotted my nervous fidgeting and just said, “Don’t worry, everyone falls in.” I liked him instantly. The place was buzzing but not frantic, just a mix of salty air and sunscreen and people laughing as they wriggled into rashguards. I hadn’t touched a surfboard since I was ten, so yeah, I was quietly panicking inside.

The first few minutes were all about basics—how to pop up, where to put your feet, how not to smack yourself in the face with the board (I appreciated that tip). Our guide, Koa, cracked jokes in between instructions and told us stories about growing up surfing these same Waikiki waves. He pointed out Diamond Head in the distance—said it’s his favorite view if you catch it at sunrise. You could hear the ocean just beyond us, that steady hush and crash that makes you want to run straight for it.

Paddling out felt awkward at first—the board is bigger than you think—but then there’s this moment when you’re lying there and suddenly you notice how warm the water is compared to back home. And then Koa gave me a push and yelled “Go!” and somehow my knees didn’t buckle right away. I wiped out spectacularly on my first try; saltwater up my nose, hair everywhere. But Li high-fived me anyway and shouted something in Hawaiian I absolutely did not catch.

By the end of our group surf lesson in Waikiki, I actually managed to stand up for a few seconds—long enough for someone on shore to snap a photo (not sure if it’s flattering but it’s proof). My arms were jelly but honestly? I still think about that feeling of gliding for those brief moments, sun on my back, city behind me. There’s something about learning from people who grew up here—it makes even falling off feel like part of the whole story.
