Beach Lesson, Then Water Time With an Instructor
North Shore surfing lessons on Oahu teach you to paddle, stand and catch waves in a 1.5-hour class with a live instructor. The lesson starts on the beach with technique drills, then moves into the water at either Chuns Reef or Pua'ena Point depending on conditions; board, rash guard and leash are provided. Children from age 4 are welcome, and the instructor stays with you throughout.
The Experience
Your lesson begins on the sand. The instructor walks you through paddling mechanics, how to pop up onto the board and how to read the wave before you catch it—all before the water. This ground work takes the guesswork out of the moment you're actually in the lineup. Once you're in the ocean, the instructor stays with you for the full 1.5 hours, watching your form and adjusting your technique as you practice. The lesson runs at one of two North Shore breaks: Chuns Reef for summer swells or Pua'ena Point for winter conditions. DFC Surf Academy picks the spot based on what the ocean is doing that day, and they'll text you the exact location and directions the day before.
You get a board, rash guard and leash—everything you need to start learning without renting separately. The class takes surfers of all ages and abilities, from kids as young as four to people in their sixties. If you want a longer session or a private lesson instead of a group class, contact them to arrange it; they're flexible with timing. The North Shore has a reputation for serious waves, but the academy focuses on beginner-friendly breaks and a safe progression, so you're not thrown into water over your head on your first day.

Can my young child take a lesson, and how does that work?
Children from age 4 are welcome. Infants and small children can come along in a pram or stroller if a parent is taking the lesson, but they'd need to sit on an adult's lap during the water time if they're in the class itself.
How long is the actual lesson, and when do I need to arrive?
