The experience
Pali Lookout opens the day with the view Mark Twain called the most beautiful in the world: the Ko'olau mountains drop straight down to the windward coast. From there the route moves to Kailua Beach, then inland to the Byodo-In Temple, a replica of a 900-year-old Japanese Buddhist temple set in a valley beneath the Ko'olau cliffs. The guide will walk you through the meditation pavilion and the sacred bell, but the pace is yours.
The North Shore comes next, with stops at Kualoa Ranch (the backdrop for Jurassic World, Pearl Harbor, and Kong), Waimea Falls and Beach, and the historic surf town of Haleiwa. If time allows, the Dole Plantation rounds out the afternoon. You'll learn how the pineapple industry began and taste pineapple ice cream while walking through tropical gardens. Eight hours is the full window, but where you spend it depends on what holds your attention.
Your certified Hawaii Professional Tour Guide speaks English or Spanish and travels with you in a private vehicle. Water is provided. You'll arrange lunch on your own at any of the stops. Entrance fees to attractions are paid separately as you go, which means you're not locked into visiting everything. If a site doesn't appeal, you skip it and move on.
