North Shore SUP Lesson & Turtle Tour: Anahulu River
Paddle a river thick with turtles, learn balance on calm water, ride small waves in the bay
A stand-up paddleboard lesson on Oahu's Anahulu River, where you learn technique in shallow brackish water abundant with sea turtles, then paddle upstream toward the Koolau Range. Small groups stay under three students per instructor, and you choose morning, midday or afternoon timing. The lesson runs 90 minutes and suits all fitness levels from age eight up.
The experience
The Anahulu River starts at the mouth near Haleiwa Harbor, where fresh water from the Koolau Range mixes with saltwater to create the brackish conditions sea turtles favor. Your instructor teaches you balance and paddling technique before you push off into water so calm the current barely moves: the whole upstream journey to where the river narrows into a mountain stream takes about an hour of nearly effortless paddling. You'll see turtles and other marine life as you go, and the solitude of the river means you're not fighting crowds or wake.
At the river's end, you turn around and follow the gentle current back downstream to Waialua Bay. If you want to try something different, small waves usually break over a sand bar in the bay, and your instructor can guide you through riding them if the conditions and your comfort level allow it. The whole outing stays under 90 minutes, and because groups max out at three students per instructor, the lesson adjusts to your own pace and what your body needs that day.
You choose your format at checkout: small-group, semi-private or private family lessons run in the morning, midday or afternoon. Your instructor provides the board, paddle and a rash guard. Bring sunglasses with a strap, a hat, and wear a swimsuit or clothes you don't mind soaking.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (under 8).
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What's the Anahulu River like for paddling?
The Anahulu River has almost no current, making it nearly effortless to paddle upstream toward the Koolau Range. The brackish water (a mix of fresh and saltwater) is what draws sea turtles and other marine life, and the river's narrow, quiet character means you paddle in solitude rather than among other boats.
Will I see sea turtles on this lesson?
Sea turtles are frequent in the Anahulu River because of the brackish water conditions, though sightings are never guaranteed. You'll paddle through their habitat for about an hour, so encounters are common but depend on the day and the turtles' own movement.
Can I try surfing or wave riding?
Once you return to Waialua Bay, small waves usually break over a sand bar there. Your instructor can help you try riding them if you want to and if conditions allow, but it's optional and depends on how you're feeling after the upstream paddle.
How many people will be in my lesson?
Groups stay under three students per instructor, so you get personalized attention. You can book a small-group lesson with other paddlers, a semi-private lesson with fewer people, or a private family lesson just for your group.
What time of day should I choose?
Morning, midday and afternoon lessons all run on the same river, so pick the time that fits the rest of your day. Morning and afternoon are both popular. Midday is an option if you want to structure your Oahu schedule differently.
