The Experience

“You know, people think New Yorkers don’t have time for sweets,” our guide Sam said, waving a paper bag that already smelled like warm sugar. “But trust me, we make time.” I didn’t expect to start my morning in the thick of Times Square with someone so genuinely excited about pastries. There was this weird comfort in the way he greeted every bakery owner by name — like we were tagging along with an old friend who just happened to know where all the good stuff was hidden behind neon and crowds.

The first stop was this little Italian place — bombolone dusted with powdered sugar, still warm. The dough was soft but chewy; I got powdered sugar on my jacket (Sam didn’t mention that part). We ate standing on the sidewalk while yellow cabs honked by and some kid tried to sell us fake sunglasses. The whole block smelled faintly of roasted nuts and something fried — not sure if it was us or just New York being New York. Someone in our group tried to pronounce “bombolone” right; Li laughed and shook her head. I probably butchered it too.

Between bites, Sam pointed out Carnegie Hall (“that’s where the Beatles played their first US concert — wild, right?”) and told us about Studio 54’s disco days. He slipped in these random facts about Ed Sullivan Theater and the Brooklyn Diner that made me want to look up old black-and-white photos later. By the time we reached Rockefeller Center for our last donut (brioche-like dough, almost buttery), I realized I hadn’t checked my phone once. The city felt different when you’re chasing donuts instead of subway schedules.

I still think about that last shop — tiny place, barely any seats, but everyone inside looked happy to be there. Maybe it was just the sugar rush or maybe it’s something about sharing sweets with strangers in Midtown. Either way, I left with sticky fingers and a list of places Sam scribbled down for lunch later. Not a bad way to see Times Square — or taste it, really.
