The Experience

You're standing outside St. Anthony of Padua Church on Sullivan Street in SoHo, and you realize you've walked past this neighborhood a hundred times without actually seeing it. That's what changes on this Greenwich Village Italian food tour. Greg Marro, a licensed NYC tour guide whose family has lived here since 1884, starts at the church itself — the first one built in America for Italian Catholics — and from there the walk unfolds like someone's opening their home to you. It's not a meal; the samples are bites. But they're bites from places that have been here for over a century, and that matters.

The tour hits six stops in just over two hours, moving through the neighborhood at a pace that lets you actually taste things and hear the stories. You'll try a Brazilian cheese bread with Pino's Prosciutto di Parma at one spot, then move to ravioli and arborio rice pudding at the 1907 family-owned Pasta Palace. There's a coffee shop with over 100 varieties of coffee and tea — the smell alone is worth the stop. Then comes the 100-year-old Italian specialty store where you sample fresh arancini, meatballs, and bread for sauce dipping. Rocco's Pastry, the last Italian bakery in the neighborhood, closes out the walk with a fruit-a-misu. The samples change sometimes, but that's the rhythm: walk a block, taste something, hear why it matters.

Greg does the serenading and the family tales himself — no microphone, no rushing. The group stays under eight people, which means you're not herding through the streets with thirty others. He points out the 1892 Italianate church where they still say Sunday Mass in four languages, and the small square where the bell tower frames the fountain just right.
