The Experience

I didn’t expect to start the morning dodging a jogger and a dog walker on the High Line, but that’s New York for you—always moving. Our guide, Sam, had this way of pausing mid-story to point out some wildflowers growing between old railway tracks. You could smell something green and earthy, even with the city below. The wind up there is different too—cooler somehow, carrying bits of music from somewhere down in Chelsea. I kept thinking how strange it felt to be above traffic but still right in the middle of everything.

After weaving through sculptures and glass buildings (Sam had opinions about those), we made our way down into Greenwich Village. The air changed—suddenly you’re hit by garlic from one doorway and sweet pastry from another. We stopped at a pizza spot where the guy behind the counter just nodded like he already knew what we wanted. I tried saying “thank you” with my mouth full and almost choked; everyone laughed, including an older woman who’d lived there her whole life (she told us about Bob Dylan once playing around the corner). It was easy to lose track of time on those brownstone-lined streets.

The food tour part started around lunchtime, which is perfect because honestly, you get hungry after all that walking. There was this butcher shop—old-school, red tiles everywhere—and they handed out slices of something salty and rich I still think about when I’m hungry late at night. We wandered past murals and tiny parks while Sam explained how artists used to gather here, sometimes protesting or just hanging out on stoops. Not everything was picture-perfect; there were delivery trucks honking and someone arguing over coffee prices outside a café. But that’s kind of why it sticks with me.
