The experience
Honestly, I didn’t expect to get goosebumps before the show even started, but there’s something about standing outside the Neil Simon Theatre, lights buzzing overhead, people from everywhere chatting in a dozen accents. Our tickets for MJ The Musical were ready at the window (no stress), and we slipped inside just as that familiar bass line thumped through the walls. You could smell popcorn, hear someone humming “Billie Jean” behind us. It felt like everyone was already halfway dancing in their seats.
The show itself? Wild energy. I kept catching myself mouthing along to every song: “Beat It”, “Smooth Criminal”, all those tracks that somehow still live rent-free in my head. The cast moved like they’d been rehearsing together for years, but our guide (well, usher, really) told us some had only joined this season. At one point, the whole crowd laughed when a kid two rows up tried to moonwalk during intermission: his mom nearly dropped her soda. There’s something about seeing Michael Jackson’s story unfold right here in New York City that feels different than just listening at home.
I didn’t know much about how he created his music before this. The way they showed his process hit harder than I thought it would. There was this scene where everything went quiet except for a single piano note. You could feel people holding their breath. And yeah, I still think about that moment sometimes when I hear those songs on the radio now.
