Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Attend Silent Night opera at the Met

  • Arrive at the Metropolitan Opera House
  • Watch Silent Night opera performance

Most nights at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City, you're sitting in the dark watching a story unfold on stage. This one starts differently — it starts with trenches, with the sound of war, and then with something that actually happened: soldiers from opposing sides of World War I who, on Christmas Eve 1914, put down their weapons and crossed into no man's land to exchange gifts and sing carols together. Kevin Puts' opera Silent Night is built on that moment, and it doesn't let go of it.

The production James Robinson staged takes you straight to the Western Front. You're not watching from a distance; the battlefields come to you. Soprano Elza van den Heever, tenors Ben Bliss and Rolando Villazón, and the rest of the cast move through Puts' grand, cinematic score — the kind that builds and breaks and builds again — while conductor Dalia Stasevska leads the orchestra through a work that's been called "an overwhelming emotive experience" since its 2011 premiere. The libretto comes from Mark Campbell, adapted from the film Joyeux Noël, so the story has already been tested; what Puts does with it musically is what makes you stay in your seat after it ends, not quite ready to move.

Your seat assignment happens when you buy your ticket — the theater assigns the best available spots based on what's left, so you'll know exactly where you're sitting before you arrive. If you need accessible seating, whether that's a transfer seat with a retractable arm or wheelchair space, you can request it in the special requirements field at checkout. The Metropolitan Opera is wheelchair accessible, and public transportation options run nearby, so getting there and getting settled doesn't become its own production.
