The experience

"You sure you've never done this before?" That’s what our range safety officer, Mike, asked after I managed to hit the bullseye on my third shot. I laughed: honestly, my hands were shaking a little when we first walked into the range in New Jersey. It’s only about fifteen minutes from Manhattan, but it felt like a different world: the sharp tang of gun oil in the air, the low thud of shots echoing down the lanes, and people chatting quietly as they waited their turn. We showed our IDs at the front (they’re strict about that), got our eye and ear protection, and then Mike handed us an AR-15 and a 9mm pistol: both heavier than I expected.

The first few minutes were all about safety and basics. Mike was patient, explaining stance and grip without making us feel dumb, even when I loaded the mag backwards (he just grinned).
