The Experience

The tour departs downtown Portland and heads east into the Columbia River Gorge, following the river toward the first major stop. Multnomah Falls drops 620 feet in two sections — the upper fall plummets 542 feet into a pool, then drops another 69 feet to form a creek that feeds the Columbia. It's the second highest year-round waterfall in the United States and the highest in Oregon, fed by underground streams that originate miles above at Larch Mountain. The guide will point out the historic lodge at the base and explain the geology that shaped the gorge itself.

After Multnomah Falls, the route continues east to Hood River, where you have an hour to eat lunch at one of the downtown restaurants, breweries, or wine tasting rooms, and browse local boutique shops if time allows. From there, the van climbs into the Hood River Valley, a landscape of thousands of acres of fruit orchards and family farms. The drive passes through what locals call the Fruit Loop — a scenic route lined with seasonally opened farm stands selling fresh fruit, vegetables, pies, jams, honey, ciders and handmade gifts. You'll also stop at Rowena Crest, a viewpoint at the top of a massive basalt feature that the Historic Columbia River Highway winds up to in a series of 1915-era switchbacks designed to let early cars with limited horsepower make the climb.

The final stretch takes you up toward Mount Hood itself. At 11,249 feet and glacier-clad year-round, the mountain is home to Timberline Lodge, the most prominent structure on the peak. The lodge's distinctive architecture has drawn visitors for over 80 years, and it sits at the base of the ski area that receives so much snow it operates the longest ski season in North America. Your guide will explain the mountain's history and heritage as the route unfolds, and will adjust stops or timing if weather or road conditions require it — the goal is to give you the best photographs and the clearest view of each site.
