The Experience

You have an afternoon free in Portland and want to see the Gorge without renting a car or piecing together transit. The tour picks you up at your downtown hotel and drives you straight into the canyon. The first stop is Women's Forum, a viewpoint where more photographs of the Columbia River Gorge are probably taken than anywhere else—the Vista House sits on the ridge across the canyon, and the whole expanse opens below you. From there you move to Vista House itself, built between 1916 and 1918 as a memorial to Oregon pioneers. The structure is carved sandstone and marble with bronze lining and amber-green opalescent art glass windows; the view from inside it reaches across the entire Gorge.

Latourell Falls comes next. The waterfall drops 249 feet over columnar basalt formations that are covered in yellow lichen and bright green growth. You walk down to the punch-bowl pool at the base, where you hear the rush of water and feel the mist it throws. The basalt columns frame the falling water on both sides—they are the same rock formations that underlie the entire Gorge, shaped by lava flows and then exposed by the ice age floods your guide will explain. Multnomah Falls is the final stop: 620 feet tall, divided into two sections, fed by underground streams from Larch Mountain miles above. It is the second highest year-round waterfall in the United States and draws over 2.5 million visitors a year. The Historic Multnomah Falls Lodge sits at the base with a restaurant, gift shop and interpretative center if you want to linger or grab food before the drive back to Portland.
