Step-by-step itinerary

Scenic flight over Columbia River Gorge

  • Fly over Columbia River Gorge
  • View Multnomah Falls from air
  • Fly past Crown Point and Vista House

The Experience

The flight departs from a local airfield and climbs into views of Multnomah Falls fed by underground springs from Larch Mountain. From the air, you see the full drop and the canyon walls around it — the perspective changes everything about what you're looking at. The guide speaks through your headset, pointing out the exposed geology and explaining why the flow is highest in winter and spring. You'll pass Vista House, the popular viewpoint that sits atop Crown Point's cliffs, and see it from an angle ground visitors never get.

The Columbia River Gorge stretches over 80 miles as the river cuts westward through the Cascade Range, carving a canyon up to 4,000 feet deep and forming the border between Washington and Oregon. From the airplane, the scale becomes obvious — the river, the ridges, the way the landscape folds. The flight is 35 minutes total, and you're airborne for most of it. Bottled water and a headset are included, so you can hear the guide clearly over the engine noise.

You'll need to arrive at least 30 minutes before departure. The airplane is not a helicopter, and weight limits apply: groups of three stay under 600 pounds total (250 pounds per person), and groups of five stay under 925 pounds total (190 pounds per person). Children must be accompanied by an adult, and infants sit on a lap. If you have spinal injuries or cardiovascular concerns, check with the operator before booking.

Top questions

How does seeing Multnomah Falls from an airplane change what you see compared to visiting it on the ground?

Multnomah Falls receives about 2 million visitors each year on foot, and the parking and crowds can overwhelm the experience on busy days. From the airplane, you see the full height of the falls, the canyon walls, and the surrounding geology all at once, without the foot traffic or the need to find a parking spot.

What is the Columbia River Gorge like, and how much of it do you see on this flight?

The Columbia River Gorge is a canyon up to 4,000 feet deep that stretches over 80 miles as the river winds westward through the Cascade Range between Washington and Oregon. The flight follows the gorge and passes Vista House at Crown Point, giving you the full scale and shape of the canyon from above.

How long is the flight, and what's included?

The flight is 35 minutes total. Included are bottled water, an individual headset so you can hear the live guide clearly, and the aerial tour itself. The guide speaks English and points out the landmarks and geology as you fly.

Are there weight or group size limits I need to know about before booking?

Groups of three passengers cannot exceed 600 pounds total (250 pounds per person maximum), and groups of five cannot exceed 925 pounds total (190 pounds per person maximum). You'll provide weights for all passengers when you book, and you must arrive at least 30 minutes before departure.

Is this tour suitable if I have mobility concerns or health conditions?

The tour is wheelchair accessible, and infants and small children can ride. Service animals are allowed. However, it is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries or poor cardiovascular health due to the aircraft environment. Check with the operator if you have concerns.
