The Experience
The tour picks you up at your downtown Portland hotel and heads straight to the Historic Columbia River Highway Scenic Byway, where the landscape opens into the Columbia River Gorge. From Crown Point, the view stretches across the Cascade mountains as the Columbia River cuts through basalt cliffs lined with waterfalls. The guide stops at Vista House, built in 1917 as a rest stop for travelers, then moves through the gorge hitting the major falls: Latourell (a 249-foot plunge with overhanging columnar basalt), Wahkeena (242 feet, named for the Yakama word meaning "most beautiful"), and Horsetail (176 feet, visible right from the highway). The town of Bridal Veil, once a lumber hub, marks the approach to the final stop.
Multnomah Falls is the centerpiece—a 611-foot cascade 30 minutes outside Portland. You'll cross the iconic Benson Bridge for a close view of the falls and have time at the gift shop, but the steep hike to the top is not included in this tour. The whole route is designed to show you the gorge's scale and variety without requiring you to drive, navigate, or piece together which falls are worth stopping for. The Sprinter van holds a small group, and a local guide narrates the route and the geology as you move between stops.
