E-bike and rock climbing adventure

  • Ride e-bike through rolling foothills
  • Stop at scenic viewpoints in Mariposa County
  • Top-rope rock climbing on Mt. Bullion

The experience

Mt. Bullion's climbing routes are the centerpiece, but you don't start there. The day opens with e-biking through the foothills around Mariposa County: electric motors handle the elevation, so you can focus on the scenery and the stops Chris builds in to let you photograph the landscape. The bike does the work. You choose the pace. Once you reach the climbing site, the ropes are already set up for top-rope routes, which means you're anchored from above and can focus on technique and movement rather than managing the wall itself. It's the format that makes climbing accessible to families and people who've never done it before.

Chris Van Leuven leads every tour. He's written about climbing and spent two decades working in Yosemite, so the stories and the route choices reflect real knowledge of the area, not a script. The gear (bikes and climbing equipment) comes with the booking, and it's sized and fitted to you before you start. Lunch and snacks are included, which means you're not hunting for food or carrying supplies. The physical demand is real (the description notes you should have moderate fitness), but the e-bike removes the barrier that usually stops people: you can climb without spending the morning gasping up a hill.

The tour runs 7 to 8 hours, which is long enough to do both sports without rushing, but short enough to fit into a single day if you're based near the park. Customization is built in. You tell Chris what you want the day to emphasize, and he shapes the stops and the climbing routes around it. Families with kids as young as 6 can join, though the fitness note applies: if climbing or sustained e-biking would strain someone, this isn't the day for them.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (6 to 12 years). Children under 6 can't be included in the booking.

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

Can I do this tour if I've never rock climbed before?

Yes. The tour is designed for first-time climbers and families. Top-rope climbing means the rope is anchored above you, so you're learning technique on a safe setup. Chris will teach you the basics and adjust the routes to match your skill level.

How does the e-bike work on hills?

The electric motor assists as you pedal, so steep elevation becomes manageable. You still pedal, it's not a motorized scooter, but the motor takes the strain out of climbing, letting you enjoy the foothills and stop to take photos without exhaustion.

What's included in the tour price?

The e-bike, all climbing gear, lunch, snacks and refreshments are included. You bring water and wear clothes suited to climbing and biking. Chris provides everything else.

How fit do I need to be?

The operator recommends at least moderate cardiovascular fitness. The e-bike helps with hills, but you're still pedaling and climbing, so some endurance matters. If you have concerns about your fitness level, contact the operator before booking.
