Whitewater Rafting Colorado River Moab: 6-Person Paddle Rafts
Paddle through red rock canyons on class II rapids, lunch on the riverbank included
Whitewater rafting on the Colorado River near Moab puts you in a 6-person paddle raft for a guided trip through the Fisher Towers section, a class II run with rapids, towering red rock walls and a riverside lunch. The trip runs about 6 hours total, includes all equipment, a professional licensed guide, transportation to and from the river, and water—bring your own bottle or ask about dietary needs when you book.
The Experience
How much paddling skill do you actually need? None. The Fisher Towers section of the Colorado River is a class II run, which means the rapids are fun and manageable without prior experience. You'll be in a 6-person paddle raft with a professional licensed guide steering from the back, calling the strokes and reading the water. The guide handles the technical decisions; you paddle when they say paddle, brace when they say brace, and learn the rhythm as you go. The red rock canyons rise around you—towering walls of stone that you pass through rather than look at from a distance.
The day runs about 6 hours from start to finish. You'll hit multiple rapids as you move downriver, each one different in how it pushes the raft and what it asks of the paddlers. Between rapids the current carries you, and that's when the canyon itself becomes the thing—the geology, the scale, the light on the walls. Partway through, the guide pulls the raft onto a riverside beach where lunch happens. It's a healthy meal, not a protein bar, and the operator asks you to flag any dietary restrictions when you book so they can plan around them.
Transportation to and from the Paddle Moab shop is included, which means no separate logistics for getting to the river. Bring a personal water bottle—the operator supplies water to refill it, but the bottle itself is yours to carry. All the gear you need to raft is provided: the raft, paddles, personal flotation device, and helmet. Children are welcome from age 8 onward. The trip is not recommended for people with poor cardiovascular health, and you'll want at least a moderate level of fitness to paddle for the full 6 hours and handle the physical demands of moving through rapids.

Is this one for you?The trip asks for a moderate level of fitness and about 6 hours of paddling and sitting in a raft—if you're comfortable with water splashing over the sides and want to be actively moving the boat rather than watching a guide do the work, this is the version that puts the paddle in your hands.

What does class II whitewater actually feel like on the Colorado River?
Class II rapids on the Fisher Towers section are playful and splashy—the raft bounces through them, water comes over the sides, and paddlers feel the push of the current, but the rapids don't flip boats or demand expert technique. A guide in the back reads the line and calls the strokes; your job is to paddle when told and hold on through the drop.
Do I need any rafting experience to paddle in a 6-person raft?
No experience is required. The guide teaches you how to hold the paddle and when to stroke as the day unfolds. Most people pick up the rhythm within the first rapid or two, and the rest of the day builds from there.
What's included in the lunch, and can you handle dietary restrictions?
Lunch is a healthy meal served on a riverside beach partway through the trip. The operator asks you to mention any dietary restrictions when you book so they can prepare something that works for you.
How long is the whole trip from pickup to drop-off?
The trip runs about 6 hours total, including transportation to and from the Paddle Moab shop, the time on the water, and the lunch stop.
What should I bring, and what does the outfitter provide?
Bring a personal water bottle—the outfitter refills it throughout the day. Everything else is provided: the raft, paddles, personal flotation device, helmet, and all safety gear. Wear clothes that can get wet and bring a change for after.
Is this trip okay for kids, and what's the age requirement?
Children are welcome from age 8 onward. They paddle in the raft with adults and follow the guide's instructions just like everyone else.
