The experience

I’ll be honest, I was nervous walking up to that stretch of sand on Miami Beach, you know, the part where everyone looks like they’ve been surfing since birth? We started on the beach with Diego showing us how to paddle and pop up (I definitely made it look harder than it was). He had this way of making everyone laugh when we messed up: at one point he mimed my awkward stance so perfectly that even I cracked up. After about 25 minutes of flopping around on the sand, we finally carried our boards into the water. The ocean felt cool against my skin, which honestly helped with my nerves. And after the lesson part ended, we could just keep practicing or float around as long as we wanted. I still think about that one second upright: ridiculous as it sounds.
