The Experience
We stepped onto the boat from Kaanapali Beach with the sand still clinging to our feet—honestly, I was a little jittery. The crew greeted us like old friends (even though I definitely wasn’t hiding my nerves). Our guide, Mika, explained everything in this calm way—she switched between English and Japanese for another couple onboard, which made me smile. I could smell sunscreen and that salty ocean breeze mixing together as we pulled away from shore.
The harness felt weird at first—kind of snug but not uncomfortable. When it was our turn to parasail above Maui, my heart thumped so loud I thought everyone could hear it. Suddenly we were rising up, the noise of the boat dropping away until it was just wind in my ears and this wild view of turquoise water below. I spotted a sea turtle near the surface—Mika pointed it out from the deck and waved up at us like she’d done this a hundred times. Maybe she had.
It’s quieter up there than you’d expect. The coastline curves out forever and you can see all these tiny people on the sand who have no idea you’re floating above them. My friend tried to shout something but her voice got swallowed by the wind—so we just laughed instead. Coming down felt almost too soon. The sun was warm on my face and for a second I forgot about everything except how small the world looked from up there.
