The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the creak of the dock under my sandals, and then the way the morning sun bounced off Paragon’s white hull. Our guide, Kaleo, grinned as he handed out reef-safe sunscreen—he joked it was “Maui perfume.” The air smelled faintly salty and sweet, like plumeria somewhere nearby. We set out from Lahaina Harbor with maybe a dozen others, all a bit sleepy but already swapping stories. When they killed the engines and let the wind take over, everything got so quiet I could hear someone laughing up at the bow.

I’d never snorkeled in Hawaii before—honestly, I was nervous about looking ridiculous in fins. But Kaleo just floated next to us in the water, pointing out where to look for sea turtles (he called them honu) and showing me how to clear my mask when I got water up my nose. The coral was brighter than I expected; little yellow fish darted everywhere. At one point I surfaced right next to a turtle gliding by—slow and ancient-looking. Didn’t even seem to notice me gawking. Someone on deck shouted about dolphins in the distance but I missed them because I was busy trying not to swallow half the Pacific.

Lunch tasted better than it had any right to after swimming—a heap of shoyu chicken and fried rice that disappeared fast. There were vegan wraps too (my friend tried one), plus cookies that melted just a little in your hand. The open bar started up as we sailed back toward Lahaina; mai tais taste different when you’re barefoot with salt still drying on your skin. A few people sprawled out on deck in patches of sun, trading stories about their favorite fish or who almost lost a flipper. The crew moved around quietly refilling drinks and telling us which mountains we could see off starboard.

I keep thinking about that moment right before we turned back—the wind snapping in the sails, everyone quiet for once, just watching Maui’s coastline slide by. It wasn’t perfect (I definitely got sunburned on my knees), but there’s something about that kind of silence you only get when you let nature do most of the work.
