The Experience

I’ll admit, I was a little nervous when our guide steered the boat toward those jagged black rocks along Maui’s Kanaio Coast — sea caves aren’t exactly my usual comfort zone. The wind whipped my hair around (should’ve tied it up), and someone behind me let out this half-laugh, half-gasp as we ducked under a lava arch. Our guide, Kaleo, just grinned and told us how his uncle used to fish from these cliffs. I could smell salt and something almost metallic in the air — volcanic rock maybe? It felt raw and ancient out there.

We stopped for breakfast — just muffins and fresh fruit but honestly, after that salty air it tasted perfect. Then came the first snorkel spot near Molokini. I fumbled with my mask (classic me), but once I got under, everything went quiet except for my own breathing. There were turtles gliding by like they owned the place, and tiny blue fish darting around coral that looked way more colorful than I expected. At one point, spinner dolphins showed up off the bow — not close enough to touch or anything (which is good), but close enough to hear them splash. Someone tried to count them but gave up after five or six.

Kaleo pointed out the backside of Molokini too — apparently not every tour gets to go there. It felt like we were getting away with something special, even though there were maybe fifteen of us on board munching on croissant sandwiches for lunch (I picked turkey & cheese). They had vegan and gluten-free stuff too if you ask ahead; one woman swapped her ham for vegan without any fuss. The sun kept shifting behind clouds so sometimes the water was neon blue, sometimes almost silver. I still think about that view through the cave arch — wild shapes against all that bright sky.

By the time we headed back past Wailea and Makena, everyone was a bit sunburned and sleepy. Someone shared a cookie from lunch with me (no grains, surprisingly good) while we listened to stories about how those sea caves formed from lava flows two centuries ago. It’s weird how quickly you start feeling like part of a little crew after just half a day together at sea.

What’s included

Your day includes a 5.5-hour boat ride along Maui’s Kanaio Coast with stops at remote sea caves and multiple Molokini snorkel spots—plus all your snorkel gear, a simple breakfast of muffins and fruit platter from local caterers, individually wrapped deli-style lunch with turkey & cheese or vegan/gluten-free options if you ask ahead, bottled water and Hawaiian juices from coolers on board, plus a chocolate chip cookie for dessert before heading back toward shore together.
