You’ll join a small group for a half-day Maui & Lanai whale watch and snorkel tour with an experienced local guide. Expect close-up moments with turtles, wild dolphins, colorful reefs, plus possible whale sightings during migration season. All gear is included along with snacks and drinks—just bring your sense of adventure (and maybe extra sunscreen).
I’ll admit it — I was nervous about getting up early for this Maui & Lanai whale watch and snorkel trip. But something about the way our captain (Kai, who’s apparently been doing this since the 80s) grinned at us made me relax. There was this salty breeze in the air, and even before we left Lahaina harbor, someone spotted a spout out near the horizon. The boat wasn’t one of those giant tourist barges — just a handful of us, hair already whipping around, and Kai cracking jokes about how he still can’t pronounce “humuhumunukunukuapua’a.”
The ride out to Lanai went by weirdly fast. We passed these sea cliffs that looked almost unreal, all red and brown against the blue water. At one point I caught a whiff of sunscreen and salt and realized I hadn’t stopped smiling since we left. When we dropped anchor at the first snorkel spot, Kai handed me my mask (he double-checked everyone’s straps like a worried uncle) and pointed out where turtles usually hang out. I actually saw two — one gliding right below me, another munching on something that looked suspiciously like seaweed salad. Not sure if it was actually seaweed salad but you get what I mean.
During whale season you can actually hear them singing underwater. It’s not loud — more like distant echoes — but it gave me goosebumps anyway. Someone on our boat tried to mimic the sound when we got back onboard; it was… not close, but it made everyone laugh so hard we almost dropped our snacks (which are basic but hit the spot after swimming). We also saw dolphins riding our wake for a minute — they’re faster than you’d think.
I still think about that feeling of floating above coral with sunlight flickering through the water, just quiet except for my own breath and maybe a faint whale song somewhere out there. It’s not fancy or dramatic — just real moments with good people, a bit of ocean magic, and some sunburn on my nose I didn’t notice until later.
