The Experience

I still remember how quiet it got when we left the marina in Marco Island—just that soft slap of water against the hull and the odd gull yelling overhead. It was humid, but not sticky, and our guide (I think her name was Carla?) handed out cold bottled water right away. She had this easy way of pointing things out without making it feel like a lecture—just, “Look there,” and suddenly you’d spot a dolphin fin cutting through the water. The boat ride through the 10,000 Islands felt sort of dreamlike—mangroves everywhere, their roots like tangled fingers dipping into the shallows. We passed some fishermen who waved at us; one had a radio playing old country music so faint you could barely catch it over the engine. When we reached Kice Island for shelling, Carla showed us how to look for shells I’d never even heard of (I still can’t pronounce “scaphella junonia”—she laughed when I tried). The sand was warm under my feet and there was this salty smell mixed with something sweet from the seaweed drying on shore.

I found a shell that looked ordinary to me but Carla got excited—apparently it’s one everyone hunts for down here.
