Step-by-step itinerary

  • Travel south down Faka Union Canal
  • See alligators and birds in mangroves
  • Boat ride through Everglades to 10,000 Islands
  • Watch dolphins play in boat wake
  • Beach on uninhabited island for shelling
  • Swim and picnic on white sand beach

The Experience

"If you see a nose pop up, that's our manatee regular," Captain Dave grinned as we pushed off from Port of the Islands. He said it so casually, but I was already scanning the water like a kid. The canal felt sleepy at first—just us and some lazy ripples—and then suddenly there was this gentle snort right next to the boat. I swear I held my breath until the manatee disappeared again. It smelled kind of earthy out there, like wet leaves and salt, and Dave kept pointing out birds I’d never even noticed before—anhinga drying its wings, a heron stalking something invisible.

The ride south through the Everglades took maybe 45 minutes? Hard to tell with all the mangroves sliding past. It’s not loud—just that low hum of the motor and sometimes a splash somewhere behind us. At one point, Dave slowed down for an alligator sunning itself on a bank (I got nervous but he just laughed). And then when we hit open water near the 10,000 Islands, two dolphins started chasing our wake like they were showing off. I didn’t expect to feel this giddy about dolphins but…there it is.

We beached on this empty stretch of sand—no footprints except ours—and Dave handed out little mesh bags for shelling. The sand felt cool under my feet even though the sun was sharp overhead. There was this salty breeze that made everything taste different at lunch (we’d packed sandwiches). Some folks went swimming; I just sat picking up shells and listening to nothing in particular. I still think about that view sometimes—the way the sky just kept going past the islands. Anyway, if you’re looking for a real wildlife day trip from Naples or Marco Island, this eco tour is probably it.
