Search for shells on an island you can only reach by water

A 2.5-hour guided cruise through the Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge takes up to 12 travelers through mangrove channels to spot dolphins, manatees and coastal birds, then lands on a secluded barrier island for shelling and exploration. Your captain provides live commentary on the area's wildlife, history and ecology. The tour includes bottled water and operates in most weather; dress for conditions and plan for moderate physical activity boarding and exploring the island.

The Experience

The boat leaves the dock and enters a maze of mangrove waterways where dolphins surface alongside you and manatees drift through the shallows. Your captain watches for them constantly and explains what you're seeing—the ecology of the refuge, how the mangroves shelter young fish, why certain birds nest here. The channels narrow and open again; the water stays shallow enough that you see the bottom in places. This part of the 2.5-hour tour is pure watching and listening, with shaded seating on a custom-built vessel designed for comfort in the heat.

Then the boat cuts across open water to a barrier island accessible only by boat. You step onto an untouched shoreline with time to walk the beach, dig for shells, or sit and take in the quiet. The island has no development, no crowds, no way to reach it except the way you came. Rare shells wash up here; what you find depends on the tide and the season, but the captain knows what to look for and what the refuge typically yields. Some travelers spend the whole stop searching; others just walk and breathe.

The return trip retraces the mangrove channels in the opposite direction, often with different light and different birds visible. Groups stay under twelve people, which keeps the boat maneuverable and the captain able to answer questions. Bottled water is provided. Infants and small children can ride in a stroller or pram; service animals are welcome. The tour runs in most weather, so bring layers or rain gear depending on the forecast.

Is this one for you?At 2.5 hours, this tour fits into a half-day without consuming your whole afternoon, leaving time for lunch or another activity in Marco Island. The small-group limit keeps the boat nimble through narrow mangrove channels and the island uncrowded, so you're not jostling for shells or competing for the captain's attention.

Top questions

What kind of wildlife will I actually see on this cruise?

Dolphins and manatees are the main draw, and your captain actively searches for them throughout the mangrove channels. Coastal birds—herons, egrets, roseate spoonbills—are visible year-round. What surfaces on any given day depends on the tide, the season and the time of day, so sightings are never guaranteed, but the refuge is their home and encounters are common.

How much time do I get on the barrier island to search for shells?

The tour allocates time on the island for shelling and exploration, though the exact length depends on tides and conditions. Your captain knows the best spots and what shells the refuge typically produces; rare finds wash up here because the island is undeveloped and only reachable by boat.

Is this tour suitable for young children?

Children are welcome and the tour is educational for all ages. Infants and small children can travel in a pram or stroller. Kids must be accompanied by an adult, and everyone should have at least moderate physical fitness for boarding the boat and walking the island shoreline.

What's included in the price?

The tour includes your captain's live guide commentary, bottled water, and access to the custom-built vessel with shaded seating. Gratuities are not included.

What should I bring or wear?

Dress for the weather and water conditions—the tour operates in most weather, so bring layers, sunscreen and a hat. Wear shoes suitable for walking a natural beach. Bring a bag or pockets for shells you find.
