This snorkel activity takes you from the white sands of Lauderdale-by-the-Sea directly into the ocean to explore Jean Cousteau's Shipwreck Snorkel Trail—the world's 2nd most-visited reef—where a professional guide leads you through 8–16 feet of water past concrete cannons, anchors and ballast piles replicating a historic shipwreck. You'll encounter large sea turtles, nurse sharks, manta rays, parrotfish, tarpon, eels, octopus and dozens of other tropical species. The 90-minute outing includes all snorkeling equipment and instruction; you must be able to swim and have at least moderate fitness.

The Experience

If you've got a free afternoon in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea and want to get in the water without renting a boat or driving to a marina, this snorkel starts at the beach. A guide with over 12 years of experience meets you at the shore and leads you directly into the ocean to the reef system that thrives just offshore. The water runs 8 to 16 feet deep, shallow enough to see the bottom and navigate the trails without advanced diving certification.

The centerpiece is Jean Cousteau's Shipwreck Snorkel Trail—a replica of wrecks that once ran aground in these waters, built with concrete cannons, a large anchor and ballast piles. The site draws visitors from around the world; only the Great Barrier Reef sees more snorkel traffic. The reef itself is actively being rebuilt, and part of the tour supports that restoration work. You'll move through the site at a pace the guide sets, stopping to point out the fish and creatures living in and around the wreck structure. Large sea turtles, nurse sharks, manta rays, barracuda, tarpon, parrotfish and spotted scorpionfish are common sightings; eels, octopus, eagle rays and cuttlefish also inhabit the reef.

All snorkeling equipment—mask, fins, snorkel and wetsuit if needed—is provided and fitted by the guide. The 90-minute outing includes instruction on how to use the gear and how to move safely through the reef. You'll need to be a comfortable swimmer and have at least moderate fitness; the guide will brief you on the conditions before you enter the water. Public transportation options are available nearby if you're not driving, and the beach entry means no boat ride or long walk to the water's edge.
