You’ll step into the wild Nevada desert for a private outdoor shooting experience near Las Vegas, firing real handguns, rifles, and shotguns under expert guidance. With plenty of rounds per guest and only eight people max, there’s space to learn at your own pace — whether you’re new or just want something more real than an indoor range. Expect laughter, nerves, and that satisfying clang when you finally hit steel.
You know that feeling when you step out of the van and the desert air just hits you — dry, a little dusty, smells faintly like sagebrush and sunblock? That’s how it started for us, about 45 minutes outside Las Vegas. Our instructor, Mike (he wore mirrored sunglasses and had this easy way of making everyone laugh), handed out ear protection and talked us through safety stuff. I’ll admit, I was nervous holding the 9mm for the first time — my palms actually got sweaty inside those gloves. Mike noticed and just nodded, “Happens to everyone.”
The private outdoor shooting range was nothing like the indoor ones I’d seen in movies. It was open sky above us, a bit windy that day — sand crunching under our boots. Each of us got to fire a minimum of 61 rounds (I lost count after a while), starting with the handgun, then moving up to the AR-15 and even a sniper rifle. The sound echoes differently outside; it’s less sharp but somehow more real. There was this moment where Li tried to say “bullseye” in Mandarin after nailing a target — Mike laughed so hard he almost dropped his clipboard.
I didn’t expect to enjoy the shotgun as much as I did. The kick surprised me every time — not painful, just… solid. We took turns at different targets: rubber ones bounced, paper ones shredded satisfyingly, steel ones rang out like church bells (if church bells were into heavy metal). Bottled water tasted weirdly good after all that adrenaline. No one felt rushed or awkward; it was capped at eight people so we actually chatted between turns about everything from favorite movies to what brought us to Vegas in the first place.
By the end, my arms were tired but I felt oddly calm. Maybe it was being out there in the sun or maybe because Mike made us all feel like we belonged — even if some of us couldn’t hit anything smaller than a dinner plate (I’m looking at you, Dave). I still think about that view across the range with everyone squinting into the bright Nevada light.
