The Experience
"You're gonna feel the difference the moment we leave the Strip," the instructor said as we climbed into the air-conditioned van. Forty minutes later, the pavement gave way to desert, and the casinos disappeared behind us. Gun Blast Vegas operates a private outdoor range near Goodsprings, and the whole setup is built around one idea: no paper targets in a crowded indoor lane, no waiting for your turn. Instead, you get a small group—never more than eight shooters—a certified instructor who stays with you the entire time, and room to actually move.
The safety briefing happens first, and it's thorough without being tedious. Then you're handed the first firearm: a 9mm semi-automatic handgun. Your instructor watches your stance, adjusts your grip, walks you through the trigger squeeze. After that comes the AR-15, then the pump-action shotgun. Each one feels different in your hands, and each one gets its own coaching. You fire 61 rounds total across all four weapons, which sounds like a lot until you're standing there and realize how quickly it goes. The real centerpiece, though, is the signature AK-47 walk-and-shoot course—you're moving through the range, engaging steel targets and reactive rubber targets that actually respond when you hit them. Most traditional indoor ranges can't offer that kind of dynamic experience, and it's the part that stays with you after the van ride back.
The desert itself is part of it. Uneven, unpaved terrain, seasonal heat or cold depending on when you go, wind that kicks up dust—it's not a climate-controlled box. That's the trade-off for getting out of the city, and it's exactly why the experience feels real instead of manufactured. Eye and ear protection, all safety equipment, ammunition, targets, instruction—everything is included. Beginners are genuinely welcome here; the instructor adapts to your level, and international visitors don't need U.S. citizenship. Just bring a valid photo ID or passport, wear closed-toe shoes, and show up sober. Kids as young as thirteen can participate if a parent or guardian is on site to give consent.
