The Experience

I’ll admit, I was a little nervous when our driver pulled up outside the hotel in this slick black van — the kind that makes you feel like you’re about to do something wild, but in a good way. The drive out of Las Vegas was quiet at first, just city fading into scrubby hills and that dry Nevada smell coming through the window. Our guide, Marcus, started cracking jokes about his own first time firing a machine gun (“I missed every single target — don’t worry, it’s normal!”). That helped. By the time we reached the desert range, I’d already forgotten to be anxious.

The sand out there is weirdly soft under your shoes, and it’s quieter than you’d expect except for the crunch of gravel and someone’s laugh echoing off the rocks. Marcus handed me a Glock first — five rounds go fast when your hands are shaking a bit. Then came the submachine guns: MP59 and UZI. The sound is nothing like TV; it’s sharper and almost physical. My favorite part (unexpectedly) was watching everyone else’s faces after their turn — half “did I really just do that?” and half pure kid-at-Christmas energy. There was a moment where someone tried to pose for their HD video with sunglasses on backwards. Nobody let them live that down.

And then there’s the .50 cal sniper rifle — only one round each, but honestly that’s enough. It kicks harder than anything I’ve ever held; my shoulder still remembers it two days later (in a good way?).
