Taste oysters where they're grown, on Alaska's only floating oyster bar

A tour from Ketchikan to Hump Island Oyster Farm combines a 30-minute coastal drive through Tongass National Forest with a boat cruise through the North Tongass waterways and a guided oyster tasting at the farm's floating bar. You'll sample three fresh Hump Island oysters, learn how the state's largest oyster producer cultivates them, and watch for whales, seals, eagles and deer en route. The boat, the Bottom Time, has heated indoor seating and 360-degree views. Children from age 5 are welcome; a live English-speaking guide leads the tour.

Step-by-step itinerary

Coastal drive and oyster farm tour

  • Coastal drive through Tongass National Forest
  • Board Bottom Time vessel
  • Cruise Clover Passage watching wildlife
  • Arrive at Hump Island Oyster Farm
  • Learn about oyster cultivation
  • Sample fresh oysters at floating oyster bar

The Experience

You start with a 30-minute drive along the coast through Tongass National Forest—the largest forest in North America—in an air-conditioned vehicle. A local guide narrates the route, pointing out wildlife and sharing facts about Ketchikan. The drive takes you to the dock where you board the Bottom Time, a vessel built for viewing: it has both heated indoor seating and open-air decks, so you can stay warm or step outside as the mood strikes.

The boat navigates through Clover Passage toward Hump Island, where whale, seal, eagle and deer sightings are common. Once at the farm—one of Alaska's largest oyster producers—you'll learn how oysters are cultivated for the state, then move to the floating oyster bar, the only one in Alaska. A guide walks you through a tasting of three fresh Hump Island oysters paired with tortilla chips and Alaskan kelp salsa. The farm sits on the water, so you're tasting the product in the place it grows.
