Summary

Totem poles, salmon runs, and Haida legends on Ketchikan’s wild edge

You’ll walk along Creek Street watching salmon leap upstream, listen to Haida legends beside weathered totem poles at the Totem Heritage Center, and maybe spot black bears or eagles fishing in the rain-soaked forest. A local guide shares stories you won’t find in guidebooks—and you’ll leave with more than just snapshots.

experience

What’s the experience like?

The first thing I remember is the slap of rain on the van roof and the way our guide, Li, grinned as she handed out binoculars. “You’ll want these,” she said. The air in Ketchikan felt like wet cedar and salt — it kind of sticks to your jacket. We rolled past Creek Street where the old wooden houses lean over the water; salmon were actually jumping upstream right under us. It was louder than I expected, all that splashing and the gulls yelling overhead.

Li grew up here — she pointed out places her grandmother used to pick berries, which made me wish I’d brought a notebook. At one stop, she bent down to show us some leaves that smelled sharp and green (devil’s club, apparently good for sore muscles). Someone asked about bears and Li just shrugged: “If they’re hungry enough.” Sure enough, we saw a black bear later, nosing around for fish while two eagles circled above. I still think about how quiet everyone got in that moment — even the kids stopped talking.

The Totem Heritage Center was my favorite part of this day trip in Ketchikan. The poles are huge up close — you can see where old paint still clings to the wood. There’s one with a raven at the top; Li told us the story of Fog Woman and how salmon return every year because of her (I probably missed half of it trying not to butcher Haida words). She laughed when I tried anyway. We finished at Creek Street again for a quick walk — it smells like damp wood and coffee from somewhere nearby. Didn’t expect to feel so connected by the end of this tour. Anyway, if you’re into real stories more than just photos, this is worth it.
