The Experience

We met our guide, Mike, right at the Port of Ketchikan—he waved us over like he already knew us. I liked that. Totem Bight State Historical Park was quiet except for the crows cackling above us. We looped back into town through Saxman Native Village and ended up on Creek Street. Boardwalks creaked under our boots as we passed old storefronts painted every color you can think of. Mike told us how this used to be Ketchikan’s red-light district; now it’s all galleries and salmon swimming below your feet if you look over the railing at just the right moment. There was a weird comfort in how life here keeps shifting but never really loses its shape—you know?
