The Experience

We met our guide, Mike, right at the Port of Ketchikan—he waved us over like he already knew us. I liked that. He asked if we wanted to see totem poles first or chase some wildlife down by Herring Cove. We voted for totems, and off we went in his van (which smelled faintly of pine needles and coffee). On the drive north, he told us about growing up Tlingit—how his grandmother used to point out which birds meant rain was coming. The windows fogged up a little from our jackets drying out after the drizzle outside.

Totem Bight State Historical Park was quiet except for the crows cackling above us. I didn’t expect the colors on the totem poles to be so bold against all that green—the red almost glowed in the mist. Mike explained what each carving meant; I tried repeating one of the names back and he just grinned (“Not bad for a first try,” he said, but I think he was being nice). Inside one of the clan houses, it felt heavy with old stories—like you could almost hear people talking if you stood still long enough. We wandered through Potlatch Park next door too—antique cars lined up behind glass, a 1934 Ford Coupe gleaming under fluorescent lights that buzzed quietly overhead.

Later we headed south toward Herring Cove. The air changed—saltier somehow—and there was this sharp smell from the fish processing plant nearby (not my favorite part). But then: eagles everywhere, perched like sentinels in spruce trees. Salmon were actually leaping upstream; I nearly dropped my phone trying to film it. Mike pointed out where black bears sometimes show up when they’re hungry enough—I half-hoped we’d see one but also kind of hoped not.

We looped back into town through Saxman Native Village and ended up on Creek Street. Boardwalks creaked under our boots as we passed old storefronts painted every color you can think of. Mike told us how this used to be Ketchikan’s red-light district; now it’s all galleries and salmon swimming below your feet if you look over the railing at just the right moment. There was a weird comfort in how life here keeps shifting but never really loses its shape—you know?
