Totem poles, eagles overhead and quiet moments in Ketchikan

You’ll ride with a local guide through Ketchikan’s lush island scenery, watch for wildlife at Herring Cove (maybe even spot a bear or eagle), see centuries-old totem poles at the heritage center, and pass through Saxman Native Village where tradition feels alive. Expect unexpected quiet moments, and maybe leave with more questions than answers.

The experience

The first thing I noticed was how green everything felt around Ketchikan, not just the trees, but the air itself, almost thick with that mossy smell you get after rain. Our guide, Mike, was already cracking jokes as we climbed into the little van (I think he’s done this a hundred times but still seemed genuinely happy to be here). Herring Cove was our first stop. There’s a hush there, even with everyone peering out for bears or bald eagles. I didn’t expect to actually see an eagle swoop so close over the water. It made me flinch, honestly. The way Mike pointed out the difference between a raven’s call and a jay’s. I’d never have noticed on my own.

If you’re lucky enough to come during salmon season (we were), you’ll see them fighting their way up this wild little ladder. It looks impossible, but somehow they make it. There’s this weird mix of excitement and respect watching them jump. A couple next to us started cheering one on like it was the Olympics. After that we headed for the Totem Heritage Center. The room smells faintly of cedar and old varnish. There are these massive totem poles leaning quietly against each other, some carved over 200 years ago by Tlingit and Haida artists. I tried to sketch one in my notebook but gave up pretty fast. There’s just too much detail.

Driving through Saxman Native Village felt different than I expected, not staged or touristy at all. We passed by a clan house where a couple of kids waved from the porch, then slowed near the carving center where someone was working on what looked like a new pole (hard to tell from the van window). There was this moment where everyone went quiet just looking out at the beach: tide was low enough that you could see driftwood scattered everywhere, gulls picking at something I couldn’t quite make out. Honestly, I still think about that silence sometimes.

What’s included

Your small group van tour includes bottled water along the way plus all entry fees and taxes covered. Just bring yourself (and maybe a rain jacket) before heading out with your local guide for two hours of stories and scenery around Ketchikan.
