A 2-hour bioluminescent kayak tour on Florida's Indian River Lagoon and Mosquito Lagoon where you paddle through waters alive with glowing dinoflagellates (May–November) or catch and hold bioluminescent comb jellies (November–April), guided by experienced local paddlers. Children from age 5 are welcome; all fitness levels can participate.

The Experience

The Indian River Lagoon comes alive after dark with single-celled organisms called dinoflagellates during the warm months, or with bioluminescent comb jellies—clear, gelatinous creatures that glow without stinging—when the water cools. Your guide handles the logistics of timing and route; you paddle calm waters lined with mangroves and palms, watching the water light up in response to your paddle, your hand trailing through it, even the wake behind the kayak. Fish leave glowing trails. Dolphins look like torpedoes. Manatees move like slow submarines through the glow.

The tour lasts 2 hours and includes the kayak, paddle, personal flotation device, and a guide who knows the lagoon and the organisms that make it glow. Bring clothes you don't mind getting wet, water shoes, and a towel to leave in your car. A camera and dry bag are optional—they won't capture the bioluminescence well, but they'll catch the people around you seeing it. You can bring a flashlight if you want; the guide provides a safety light.

What makes this work is the darkness and the timing. The bioluminescence is strongest when the water is still and the sky is black, which is why the tour runs after sunset. The dinoflagellates exist in millions per liter—a perfectly natural, harmless concentration of microscopic algae that produces light on its own. In winter, when the comb jellies arrive, you can hold them in your palm and watch the glow trickle down your arm.
