Step-by-step itinerary

Elk rut viewing in Estes Park

  • Tour Estes Park in open Jeeps
  • Observe elk competing for dominance
  • Visit Rocky Mountain National Park area
  • Watch elk in natural habitats around town

The experience

The elk rut happens once a year, and the window is short. During fall, massive bull elk move down from the high peaks into Estes Park and the lower reaches of Rocky Mountain National Park to compete for mates. They bugle (a sound that carries across the valleys) strut, and spar with rivals in a display of raw animal power. Your guide times the tour for sunrise and sunset, the hours when elk are most vocal and active, so you're not watching from a distance or waiting for something to happen. You're there when the animals are in motion.

You travel in open Jeeps, which means unobstructed views and the ability to hear the bugles and the clash of antlers without a windshield between you and the sound. The route covers both the town of Estes Park, where elk often descend during the rut, and the park itself. Your guide shares what's happening: why the bulls are behaving this way, how the harem structure works, what the seasonal shift means for the animals. The light at sunrise and sunset is part of the experience: golden aspens frame the landscape, and the low angle of sun catches the animals as they move.

Rocky Mountain National Park entry and all fees are included in the price, so there's no separate transaction at the gate. The tour lasts two hours. Children as young as one can come along: infants and toddlers can ride in a stroller or pram. Service animals are welcome. If you want to tip your guide, you can arrange that at the end of the tour.

What’s included

  • Rocky Mountain National Park entry and timed-entry pass.
  • all fees and taxes.
  • two-hour tour in open Jeeps.
  • live guide in English with expertise in elk behavior and seasonal wildlife patterns.

Top questions

Yes. Ticket types: Child (1 to 12 years).

What time of day does the elk rut tour depart?

The Ruttin' Around tour runs at sunrise and sunset, the two windows when bull elk are most active and vocal during the rut. Both departures give you the peak hours for sightings and sound.

Will I definitely see elk on this tour?

Elk are known to come down into Estes Park and throughout Rocky Mountain National Park during the rut season, so your guide will have good chances of finding them in both locations. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, but the timing and route are built around where the animals are most active.

Is the open Jeep tour comfortable in fall weather?

Fall in the Rockies brings crisp mountain air and golden aspens, but temperatures can be cool at sunrise and sunset. Dress in layers. The open design of the Jeeps lets you experience the landscape and hear the elk without barriers, which is part of what makes the tour work.
