The Experience

The Destrehan Plantation Big House stands in River Road, about 30 minutes from downtown New Orleans. At 6:30 p.m., an experienced interpreter meets you and hands over the ghost-hunting equipment—dowsing rods, EMF readers, spirit boxes—before leading you into the manor. You'll move through the most haunted corners of the plantation, stopping in rooms where visitors and staff have reported activity, and you'll use the tools yourself to search for it.

The tour weaves the 1811 Slave Revolt into the hauntings. The plantation's history is inseparable from the spirits said to remain, and the interpreter connects both as you walk. The 90 minutes covers the manor and the grounds; you're not sitting in a theater listening to stories—you're standing in the actual spaces, holding equipment, looking for evidence. The dowsing rods dip or don't. The EMF readers spike or stay quiet. What you find (or don't) is part of the experience.

Transportation to and from the plantation is on you—Uber, Lyft, or taxi from New Orleans work fine. The grounds are wheelchair accessible, and the manor itself is navigable. If you're bringing small children, strollers are welcome. The tour runs Thursday through Sunday only, so plan around those nights.
