The Experience

We met our guide right in the French Quarter—he wore a battered hat and had this way of talking that made you lean in. I could smell fried dough from somewhere (beignets maybe?) as we set off down Royal Street, but honestly, I was more focused on the way the air felt heavier than usual. He started with a story about a murder that never got solved. The details were weirdly specific—like, which window the neighbors swore they saw flickering candlelight through. I caught myself glancing up at the windows too, half-expecting something to move.

We ducked into an alley where he said pirates used to sell stolen goods—right next to a church, which just feels so New Orleans. Someone in our group asked if people really believed in vampires here and he grinned, told us about a spot on Bourbon Street where “something” was seen more than once. I didn’t expect to laugh so much but when he tried to get us to say ‘gris-gris’ properly, Li laughed so hard she nearly dropped her phone. There’s something about hearing these stories while you’re actually standing there—makes your skin prickle a bit.

Jackson Square looked totally different at night.
