The experience

You meet your guide at Musical Legends Park and walk a short distance to the Mississippi River levee, where the first story unfolds: how levee construction transformed swamp into the farmland that made New Orleans a regional hub. From there the route moves through the French Market (the oldest open-air market in the US), and into Jackson Square, the heart of the Quarter, where the Cabildo (built 1795–1799, now the Louisiana State Museum) and the Presbytere (1791, with two permanent exhibits on the city's resilience and celebration) frame two sides of the plaza.

Inside St. Louis Cathedral, the guide shows you where the Great New Orleans Fire of 1788 started and explains how the rebuilding established the architectural style you see around you now.
