You’ll fly low over the Columbia River Gorge in a small plane with a local guide, catching unique views of Crown Point and Vista House you can’t get from the road. Feel the rush as you glide between rising cliffs, spot landmarks below, and share laughs midair before touching down—an experience you might replay in your head long after landing.
I didn’t really know what to expect until we were actually climbing into that tiny plane outside Portland, our pilot (I think his name was Mike?) grinning like he’d just found an extra donut in the box. It was just me and my sister, both a bit nervous—she kept checking if her phone had enough storage for photos. The propeller started up with that old-school rattle, and suddenly we were rolling down the runway, wind pressing against the windows.
The Columbia River Gorge opened up below us faster than I thought it would. You could see how the river just carves through everything—so wide and blue, with these cliffs on either side that almost looked fake from above. Mike pointed out Crown Point and the little round Vista House perched right on top; from up here it looked like a marble dropped by some giant kid. He told us about how people drive all the way out just for that view, but honestly? From this angle it’s something else. I could smell a bit of fuel mixed with cold air coming through the vents, which sounds weird but kind of made it real.
We dipped lower along the river—close enough to spot tiny cars winding along Highway 30—and I remember thinking: this is what birds must feel like when they’re just gliding for fun. My sister tried to get a video but mostly caught her own gasp when we banked left near the cliffs. Mike laughed and said he never gets tired of seeing people react like that. There’s something about seeing Oregon and Washington split by water like that—makes you realize how big this place really is.
The whole flight was maybe twenty minutes? It felt both longer and shorter at once—I still think about that one moment where sunlight hit the water just right and made everything glow gold for a second. We landed back at the little airstrip, legs wobbly but grinning. Not sure I’ll ever look at rivers or cliffs quite the same way again.
