Step-by-step itinerary

Evening bioluminescent kayak tour

  • Arrive at launch location
  • Meet ACA certified Florida naturalist guide
  • Launch kayak and paddle in lagoon
  • Observe bioluminescence in water
  • Spot dolphins and manatees
  • View Milky Way and night sky
  • Learn about lagoon ecology
  • Optional water sampling on summer nights

The experience

The launch sits on open water with a direct view of the Space Center's vehicle assembly building and rocket pads across the lagoon. On clear nights, the Milky Way fills the sky overhead, and shooting stars, Starlink satellites and even the International Space Station pass through. Your guide has the kayak and gear ready when you arrive, so you step in and paddle out into water that glows as you move through it. The bioluminescence comes from a microscopic algae that lights up when disturbed.

A certified Florida Naturalist leads the paddle and explains the lagoon's ecology from the bottom of the food web up. Dolphins and manatees often surface beside you in the glowing water. On some summer nights, the tour includes a chance to help with water sampling that feeds into a scientist's research on the dinoflagellate bloom in the lagoon, so you're not just watching the ecosystem. You're part of tracking it.

The paddle is moderate in physical demand. Children from age 5 can ride in a tandem kayak with an adult. Service animals are welcome. Public transit stops nearby if you're not driving. Bug spray is essential for the night tour, and the 2-hour window means you're back on land well before midnight.

  • Kayak, life jacket, whistle and safety light.

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What exactly causes the water to glow on this kayak paddle?

Microscopic algae called dinoflagellates create the bioluminescence. They light up when the water is disturbed, so your paddle strokes and the movement of dolphins and manatees trigger the glow all around you.

Can I bring my five-year-old on the bioluminescent kayak?

Children from age 5 are welcome and can ride in a tandem kayak with an adult. The guide will have everything set up and ready when you arrive.

What's included in the kayak rental?

The kayak, life jacket, whistle and safety light are all included. You'll need to bring bug spray for the night paddle.

Will I actually see dolphins and manatees in the dark?

Dolphins and manatees often surface beside the kayak in the glowing water, making them visible even at night. The bioluminescence lights them up as they move through the lagoon.

What's the view like from the launch point?

The launch has open views of the Space Center's vehicle assembly building and rocket launch pads across the water, and on clear nights you can see the Milky Way, shooting stars, Starlink satellites and sometimes the International Space Station overhead.
